New lighting will be installed at Portlands’s Hanlon Park with $288,000 in funding secured by Western Victoria MP James Purcell.
Existing lighting is not up to minimum standards and the Portland Football Netball Cricket Club has long campaigned for improvements, approaching Mr Purcell in August for help.
“They has been knocked back three times in funding applications and when they approached me to help I was able to plead their case to the Minister for Sport and get a funding commitment,” Mr Purcell said.
The Portland Football Netball Cricket Clubs vision is to improve safety and night game and training opportunities for its 1000 members. Glenelg Shire has promised $430,000 toward the $575,000 lighting project, with another $50,000 raised by the club itself.
Mr Purcell has secured the shortfall.
“The club and it’s community have worked very hard at fundraising for these improvements. I believe in the value of community sporting clubs; they are an essential part of the health and well-being of our regional towns and it’s great to be able to help them make these improvements,” he said.
“It’s the job of local MPs to take community needs to the government and make sure the little guys are heard, helped and funded.”
