James Purcell will head a community committee to drive the expansion of South West Health.

Member for Western Victoria James Purcell will chair a government-appointed community committee to look at future expansion of South West Health.

Member for Western Victoria Gayle Tierney made the announcement at South West Health on Friday, together with a $2m funding allocation for the medical service.

Mr Purcell said he was thrilled to be heading up the committee.

“I’m very pleased to be chairing this committee, which will look at the proposed stage two expansion of SWH and ultimately attempt to secure $112 million required for stage two,” Mr Purcell said.

“Our first step will be attempting to secure $7.5 million in the upcoming budget to develop a master plan, feasibility study, tender documentation and other components necessary to make the project shovel ready.

“The committee will also be responsible for ensuring the community’s needs are incorporated in any future expansion.”

This is not the first time the Andrews Government has created an advisory group for a hospital service, with the Goulburn Valley Health Community Advisory Group established in 2015. Chaired by Independent Member for Shepparton Suzanna Sheed, Goulburn Valley Health was allocated $168.5m in the 2016/2017 budget for development.

Mr Purcell said he was looking forward to working through the process.

“Stage two will include additional theatre and emergency department capacity, as well as refurbishment of the multi-storey block, short stay unit, pathology and radiology.

“SWH is a key medical provider, with a catchment area of 110,000 people. It treated 27,000 emergency departments in 2014/15 and this critical upgrade will provide much needed improvements to this very important medical facility.”
